Kathmandu, June 14: The families of those buried to death while laying drinking water pipes in the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday night will receive Rs 1.1 million each as compensation.
Three labourers died in the incident when the clay deposited on the side of the pit had fallen on the workers suffocating them to death at Shitapaila Chowk of Wardn No 14 of Kathmandu Metropolis at about 2: 00 am.
The deceased were identified as Santosh Das of Saptari and Shyam Sundar Ram of Saptari district and Tej Prasad KC of Parbat district. They were working for the project since 7 months, according to the police.
The pipe laying was being conducted by the Tenzing Raman Constructions as per its agreement with Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited’s (KUKL) Project Implementation Directorate (PDI).
According to the KUKL’s PID’s spokesperson Leela Prasad Dhakal, the decision to compensate each bereaved families with Rs 1.1 million was made in a meeting attended by the construction entrepreneurs, families of the deceased and the contractors on Wednesday.
The compensation amount will be provided as per the Labour Act and Contract Agreement.
